Alert in Pinar del Río due to high probability of heavy rains and flooding

The Cuban Meteorological Institute (Insmet) and its Forecast Center have issued an alert due to the high possibility of heavy rains and flooding in low-lying areas of the province of Pinar del Río.

Meteorological authorities are keeping a close watch on an area of low pressure located in the Western Caribbean Sea, which has a high potential for cyclonic development, with a 70% probability in the coming days.

Torrential Rainfall: Much of the province is expected to receive between 150 and 200 mm of accumulated rainfall, with a possible peak exceeding 300 mm in the far west. This forecast covers the days from 24 to 26 September, which increases the risk of flooding in vulnerable areas.

The main danger associated with this weather situation is heavy rains, which could cause rivers to overflow and water to accumulate in urban and rural areas.

Strong Winds: Tropical storm force winds exceeding 62 km/h are also expected as the system moves northward through the Yucatan Channel or near the western edge of Pinar del Rio. This disturbance is likely to intensify into a Depression or Tropical Storm.

Authorities from Insmet and the Provincial Meteorological Centre urge the population to stay informed and follow the instructions of civil protection, given that this situation could worsen as the days go by.
