Sky News: Israel’s president denies being behind pager attack in Lebanon

– I deny that Israel had anything to do with this operation, he says to the British broadcaster Sky News.

Herzog acknowledges that the tension between Israel and Lebanon has increased recently, but goes on to say that Israel does not want a war with Lebanon. However, he believes that the country “has been taken over by Hezbollah” and that Israel is “fighting for the entire free world”.

He adds that Hezbollah “has many enemies”.

First comment

Herzog’s comments are Israel’s first on the widespread attack, which hit both pagers and walkie-talkies linked to Hezbollah members. In total, over 40 people were killed and several thousand injured in Beirut and other Lebanese cities.

Both Hezbollah and the Lebanese government have accused Israel of being behind it. The United States, one of Israel’s closest allies, has also denied involvement in the attack. Washington has also said they do not know who is behind it.

Disappointed with the UK

During the interview, Herzog was asked if he is disappointed with the new British government’s approach to Israel. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has recently suspended several arms export licenses to Israel.

Herzog replies that he has good relations with the new government and the British people in general, but:

– You have to understand that we expect friends and allies to be there for us in the same way that we are there for them, he says.

– And yes, it is true that there is a general disappointment in Israel.
