The 27-year-old Nakagawa was waiting to enter the main draw as an alternate for this tournament, but due to a withdrawal from the main draw just before the start of the tournament, he entered the main draw as an alternate. He defeated J. Jones (UK), ranked 460th in the world, A. Bernard (USA), ranked 870th in the second round, C. Eubanks (USA), the top seed, in the quarterfinals, and K. Edmund (UK), formerly ranked 14th in the world, in the semifinals, to advance to his first final in a Challenger tournament.
In the first set of the final, Nakagawa took the lead after winning a close tiebreaker after neither player was able to break their serve. However, in the second set, he allowed a second break in the final stages and was caught up to tie the set score at 1-1.
In the final set, Nakagawa won 86% of points on his first serve, including six service aces, and did not allow a single break. He failed to convert five chances in the return game, sending the match into a second tiebreak, but he won the close match after a 3-hour, 16-minute struggle.
