Spanish prosecutors ask Supreme Court to withdraw Puigdemont’s arrest warrant

The Spanish Prosecutor’s Office requested this Wednesday to the Supreme Court of that nation that Lift the arrest warrant against former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and declare all crimes attributed to him and the other pro-independence leaders amnestied involved in the so-called “procés”.

In separate reports, the Public Prosecutor’s Office formally requests the high court to apply the amnesty law in full to former vice president Oriol Junqueras and the rest of those convicted, as well as to those who fled, including Puigdemont, two of his former ministers – Toni Comín and Lluis Puig – or the ERC leader Marta Rovira, who are demanding that their arrest warrants be withdrawn, reported Efe.

For his part, the former president of the Catalan Generalitat Carles Puigdemont has asked the Supreme Court to lift the arrest warrant against him as “only solution” according to the amnesty law, and proceed to “declare amnestied” all the facts attributed to him in the “procés”.

Puigdemont’s defense has submitted a document to the magistrate who has been investigating him since 2017, Pablo Llarena, in which he defends that the amnesty law “inevitably” leads to the erasure of the national arrest warrant and imprisonment against him as a defendant in absentia for aggravated embezzlement and disobedience.

The Catalan Sovereignty Process (Procés) was an attempt sponsored by senior officials of that region between 2012 and 2022, to try to illegally obtain its sovereignty, for which they were tried and sentenced, but As part of the negotiations for Pedro Sánchez to obtain a majority in Parliament to become head of government last November, an amnesty was granted for those prosecuted.
