The use of gamification systems with artificial intelligence (AI) in mathematics curricular teaching has grown exponentially in Brazil. The main example is the use in Brazilian schools of the Matific math games platform, which specializes in the gamification of mathematics and serves students aged 5 to 14 throughout the country. The tool is part of the daily school life of almost 3 million students, from 12 thousand Brazilian schools, including public and private institutions.

Exponential increase in the use of mathematical games

According to the platform’s report, the number of students using the startup Matific’s math game system in their curriculum jumped from 1.2 million in 2023 to 2.8 million this year, a growth of 133% in the period. Meanwhile, the number of schools that use the company’s tool grew 71.4% from last year to now, going from 7,000 to the current 12,000.

The AI system promotes the inclusion of students in special education, adapts exercises individually, provides lesson plans and generates performance reports by student and class, among other features.

This growth, which ensured a growth in the startup’s business of around 122% between 2023 and 2024, puts Brazil at the forefront among developing countries in combating the gap in learning among young people and children in mathematics, which has intensified even further since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Use of mathematical games even in the public network

Proof of this success can be seen in the performance of students in the public school system in the state of Paraná. The tool ensured a leap in the results of the Prova Paraná assessment system, rising from 46% in 2021 to 66% in 2023 for students in the 6th grade of elementary school. In the case of students in the 7th grade, the volume of correct answers jumped from 38% to 54% in the period.

“With the advancement of the internet, artificial intelligence and low-cost devices, it is possible to bring quality education to any child, in every corner of Brazil, especially to students known as ‘digital natives’,” says Dennis Szyller, CEO of Matific in Brazil. “Our main goal is to bring a high-quality mathematical experience to children, offering a personalized learning system mapped to each student’s skill level, which increases confidence, always in a fun and engaging way for the student,” he adds.

Currently, Matific serves around 1,600 private schools, with more than 230,000 students from the main education networks in the country, and 10,400 from public institutions, totaling around 2.6 million students spread across state and municipal schools, in all Brazilian regions.

Users have access to the company’s complete collection of digital math games, with almost 660 million activities, challenges and exercises completed in 2024. The system is also aligned with the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) and the main textbooks in the country.
