Earthquake on Mount Athos: “It is possible that the fault will break with a magnitude of 6” says Papazachos

The professor of seismology of the AUTH, Costas Papazachos speaking to halkidikinews.gr and Thodoris Doukas emphasized that we have earthquakes of this magnitude every day in the Greek area and there is no concern. But in this particular case, said the professor, we have a seismic sequence that takes place in a location that has been under stimulation for many weeks.

Mr. Papazachos did not rule out the possibility of “breaking” this fault with an earthquake of the order of 6 on the Richter scale, so the residents and especially the monks in the nearby areas should be alert.

“We have a phase of new excitement on this particular new fault. The sequence may disappear even after a few months, but the possibility of an earthquake breaking the entire length of this fault cannot be ruled out. And since this will have a magnitude that can exceed 5.5 and reach close to 6, the preparedness measures in the nearby areas must remain in force” underlined Mr. Papazachos.

As the professor mentioned, the residents of Halkidiki and in the second leg across the street are not in danger of such a thing. “But the closest areas such as Ouranoupoli, marginally up to Ammouliani and Nea Roda and especially the monasteries of Mount Athos should be on alert and should not use old buildings that have problems” said the professor.
