Inflation at 2.7% in August

At Inflation was 2.7% in August (from 2.5% in July) in Greece.

According to ELSTATfrom the comparison of the General CPI of August 2023 with the corresponding Index of August 2022 there was an increase of 2.7% against an increase of 11.4% which was noted during the corresponding comparison of the year 2022 with 2021 (Table 2).

The products with their upward trajectory

THE General CPI during the month of August 2023compared to July 2023 it showed no change. In the corresponding comparison of the previous year, there was a decrease of 0.3%.

THE average CPI of the twelve months September 2022 – August 2023compared to the corresponding Index of the twelve months September 2021 – August 2022, showed an increase of 5.5% compared to an increase of 7.9% noted during the corresponding comparison of the twelve months September 2021 – August 2022 with the twelve months September 2020 – August 2021.

Comparison of August 2023 with July 2023

OR zero change in the General CPI in the month of August 2023compared to the corresponding Index of July 2023, mainly resulted from changes in the following groups of goods and services:

1. From the increases of the indicators by:

• 0.4% in the group Durable goods-Household items and services, mainly due to an increase in prices of items of immediate household consumption.

• 0.2% in the Health group, mainly due to an increase in the prices of medical products.

• 1.2% in the Transportation group, mainly due to an increase in fuel and lubricant prices. Part of this increase was offset by a decrease in prices mainly for air passenger tickets.

• 0.2% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to an increase in prices in restaurants-patisseries-cafes.

• 1.1% in the Other goods and services group, mainly due to price increases in other personal care items.

2. From the reductions of the indicators by:

• 0.2% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to a decrease in prices mainly in: breakfast cereals, fresh fish, eggs, fresh fruit. Part of this decrease was compensated by the increase in prices mainly in: fresh whole milk, olive oil, fresh vegetables.

• 6.3% in the Clothing and footwear group, due to general summer sales.

• 0.1% in the Housing group, mainly due to a decrease in prices in: electricity, natural gas. Part of this decrease was offset by the increase in prices mainly in residential rents.

• 0.4% in the Communications group, mainly due to a decrease in prices for telephone services.

Year-on-year comparison

The increase of the General CPI by 2.7% in the month of August 2023, compared to the corresponding Index of August 2022, came mainly from the changes in the following groups of goods and services:

1. From the increases of the indicators by:

• 10.7% in the group Food and non-alcoholic beverages, due to price increases mainly in: bread and cereals, meats (general), fish (general), dairy and eggs, oils and fats, fruits (general), vegetables (general ), sugar, chocolates-sweets-ice creams, other foods, coffee-cocoa-tea, mineral water-soft drinks-fruit juices.

• 3.2% in the group Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, mainly due to an increase in prices of alcoholic beverages (not served).

• 6.9% in the Clothing and footwear group, due to price increases in clothing and footwear.

• 5.6% in the group Durable goods-Household goods and services, due to price increases mainly in: household appliances and repairs, glassware-tableware and household utensils, household goods for immediate consumption, household services.

• 5.9% in the Health group, mainly due to price increases in: pharmaceutical products, medical products, medical, dental and paramedical services, hospital care.

• 1.6% in the Transportation group, due mainly to price increases in: new cars, used cars, car parts and accessories, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, air passenger tickets. Part of this increase was compensated by the decrease mainly in fuel and lubricant prices.

• 3.3% in the Leisure-Cultural activities group, mainly due to price increases in: leisure and cultural durables, small leisure items-flowers-pets, cinemas-theatres, package holidays.

• 2.2% in the Education group, mainly due to price increases in: primary education fees, secondary education fees.

• 6.1% in the Hotels-Cafes-Restaurants group, mainly due to an increase in prices in: restaurants-patisseries-cafes-canteens, hotels-motels-inns.

• 3.9% in the Other goods and services group, mainly due to price increases in: hair salons and personal care stores, other personal care items, health insurance premiums, vehicle insurance premiums.

2. From the reduction of the index by:

• 12.6% in the Housing group, mainly due to a decrease in prices in: electricity, natural gas, heating oil. Part of this decrease was offset by the increase in prices mainly in: house rents, house repair and maintenance, utility services, LPG, solid fuels.

• 3.1% in the Communications group, mainly due to a reduction in prices for telephone services.
