In a strange incident, the Egyptian League shield split in half during Al-Ahly’s coronation

The ceremony of Al-Ahly receiving the new league cup, presented by the Professional Clubs Association, witnessed it falling to the ground, as its base separated from the shield itself, when Al-Ahly captain Mohamed El-Shennawy took possession of the shield.

Al-Ahly players, with the participation of officials from the Professional Clubs Association, which is responsible for organizing the Egyptian Football League competition, tried to return the base to the shield, to form its basic shape, but to no avail, so Al-Ahly, through its goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy and its players, was forced to celebrate with the two pieces together, and not the entire shield in a strange and unprecedented incident.

Immediately, pictures of the shield splitting spread like wildfire on social media. What is striking is that this is the first time such a cup has been given to the Egyptian league champion. It arrived in Cairo a few days ago after being designed in England, to the point that Al-Ahly’s coronation was delayed for more than a month after the end of the league championship due to the shield’s late arrival.

Social media users wondered why the league shield was split despite it being new, and some called for an investigation into the matter, while others addressed the matter with sarcasm.

Former Egyptian national team star Ahmed Hossam Mido called on the Ministry of Youth and Sports to investigate this incident, especially since it cost the state millions of pounds.

Mido wrote on his account on the “X” platform: “I hope that there will be an investigation by His Excellency the Minister, Dr. Ashraf Sobhi, into the incident of the fall of the base of the league shield at the moment of Al-Shennawy, the captain of Al-Ahly, celebrating.”

He continued: “How can a shield that cost the state millions be dismantled in this way? And how can it even look like this?”

He continued sarcastically: “I swear I thought it was a truck truck!!”

Others defended it by saying that it is natural for the league shield to have a base on which to rest because it is “not a cup,” but the mistake lies in not communicating with the players to alert them.

“The base of the shield is very clearly designed to rest on surfaces, which of course makes sense since it’s not a cup designed to be held in your hand,” said one X user.

He continued: “There was a miscommunication and the company did not explain how to use it, as the upper part of the shield itself is the one that is lifted by hand, and the other part is fixed. As for the design, this is a matter of taste.”
