Protests in Sindh over proposed amendment to Ursa Act, construction of six canals

Pakistan Muslim League (Functional), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Fazlur Rahman), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Sindh United Party, Jamaat-e-Islami, Qaumi Awami Tehreek, Sindh Progressives called for protest against amendments in IRSA laws and the extraction of six new canals from the Indus River. It was given by 11 political, religious and nationalist parties, including the party, Jai Sindh Mahaz, People’s Workers Party and Jamhoori Awami Party, which has been protesting in almost the entire province.

Recently the federal government decided to implement telemetry system for Pakistan Irrigation Network, restructure Ursa policy and construct six new strategic canals under ‘Green Pakistan Initiative’.

The proposed canals include Reni Canal and Thar Canal in Sindh, Cholistan Canal in Punjab, Greater Thal Canal, Kuchchi Canal in Balochistan and Chasma Right Bank Canal (CRBC) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Nationalist leader and head of Sindh Progressive Party, Dr. Qadir Magsi, termed the amendments in the Ursa Act and the construction of six new canals as an anti-Sindh project of the PPP and announced to continue the protest until the end of these controversial projects.

GDA leader Sardar Rahim said: ‘The whole of Sindh is in full protest against all these controversial projects. PPP’s double and hypocritical policy will not work.

President Asif Ali Zardari approves these projects and People’s Party Sindh pretends to pass a resolution against these projects in the Sindh Assembly.

He said: ‘If the People’s Party is against the amendment of the Ursa laws and the construction of these controversial canals, why does it not demand the resignation of the conspirators?’

People’s Party Sindh President Nisar Khoro said in this regard that the federal government has assured that no amendment is being made in the Ursa Act and therefore the GDA’s protest is of no use now.

In a statement issued yesterday, Nisar Khoro said: “The People’s Party has passed a unanimous resolution against the amendments in the Arsa Act and has given the decision of Sindh that Sindh will not accept water robbery under any circumstances. Therefore, Sindh rejects any amendment in the Ursa Act.

After the unanimous resolution of the Sindh Assembly against the amendments in the Ursa Act, some parties, including the GDA, have just woken up. When this matter of issue and amendments is over and now their protest is of no use.

He further said that ‘water is a provincial subject and without the will and consent of the province, even a comma or a full stop cannot be changed in the Ursa Act, nor can the federal government do this because the issue of water is a matter of Ursa and CCI. comes under the authority of.

Nisar Kharo further said that when the caretaker government appointed Ursa Chairman, Sindh reacted strongly. On which the federal government had to withdraw its decision, still the federal government cannot amend the Ursa Act.

According to him, after the approval of the resolution by the Sindh Assembly to reject the amendment in the Ursa Act, the federal government has assured that no amendments will be made in the Ursa Act.
