The 27-year-old Nakagawa was waiting to enter the main draw as an alternate for this tournament, but due to a withdrawal from the main draw just before the start of the tournament, he entered the main draw as an alternate. He defeated J. Jones (UK), ranked 460th in the world, A. Bernard (USA), ranked 870th in the second round, and C. Eubanks (USA), the top seed, in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.

In the semi-finals, Nakagawa faced former world No. 14 K. Edmund (Great Britain). He won the first set after a tiebreak, but was unable to win a single game in the second set, losing all in one set. However, he managed to break twice in the final set and won in two hours and ten minutes. The scores were 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-2.

In the other semifinal, 25-year-old Tulota faced world No. 253 N. Vasavareddy (USA). After losing the first set in a close tiebreak, Tulota broke three times in the second and final sets. With stable service games, she came from behind to win in two hours. The score was 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-0.

This resulted in a final match between two Japanese players, Turota and Nakagawa, marking the first time the two have faced each other.
