US election – Harris again calls on Trump to hold another TV duel

The vice president’s campaign team announced on Saturday that Harris had accepted an invitation from CNN for October 23. The Democratic candidate was “ready for another opportunity to share the stage with Donald Trump,” said Harris’ campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon. Trump immediately declined.

“She’s been in one debate. I’ve been in two,” Trump said at a campaign rally in North Carolina. “It’s too late for another debate. I’d love to in many ways, but it’s too late.”

Harris had already challenged her Republican rival to a second duel shortly after her first televised debate with Trump on September 10 – which the former president declined ( reported). “There will be no third debate,” Trump declared at the time on his online platform Truth Social – counting not only his duel against Harris, but also the one with President Joe Biden on June 27, which had sparked a heated discussion about the incumbent’s mental state. As a result, Biden then decided not to run again.

According to polls and the majority opinion of political commentators, Harris had won the first debate against Trump. She put the Republican on the defensive with numerous targeted attacks. During the debate, Trump also made the racist accusation, which was not supported by any facts, that migrants were stealing and eating the dogs and cats of residents of the city of Springfield in the US state of Ohio. In a snap poll conducted by CNN, 63 percent of respondents saw her as the winner, compared to 37 percent for Trump. The former president, however, argued that he had won the televised debate.

“It would be a first in modern history for there to be only one debate in the presidential election,” argues Harris’ campaign team. Voters deserve another TV debate to get an idea of the “competing visions for America,” they argue.
