A military helicopter has crashed in western Kenya, killing five soldiers.

According to local media, Kenya’s chief of army staff, General Francis Omody Ogola, was on board that helicopter. His health status remains unclear at this time.

Three military personnel aboard the helicopter were injured and have been taken to a hospital, the source added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The helicopter crashed in Elgeyo-Marakuet province, Kenyan presidential spokesman Hussein Mohamed said, without giving further details on the cause and casualties. President William Ruto has convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council tonight at the presidential palace in Nairobi.

Government spokesman Isaac Muaura said in a post that a statement on the accident would be issued soon.

At least ten military personnel were killed in June 2021 when their helicopter crashed on landing near Nairobi.
