A former senior official at Israel’s spy agency Mossad and a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies think tank in Tel Aviv says the wave of bomb attacks in Lebanon was a successful operation.

“Ultimately, it was a combination of three elements that worked perfectly, intelligence on the one hand, technology on the other hand, and operational capability. The combination of the three made this attack, this operation successful,” said Sima Shine, speaking from Tel Aviv via video call to British TV station Sky News, as reported by VOA on Friday (9/20).

At least 12 people were killed and nearly 3,000 injured in Tuesday’s attacks, while explosions of walkie-talkies and other electronic devices across Lebanon on Wednesday killed 25 people and injured more than 600 others.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israel informed the US of the operation, in which a small amount of explosives hidden inside a pager was detonated.

Lebanon’s government and Iran-backed Hezbollah also blamed Israel for the deadly blast. The Israeli military, which has a long history of conducting sophisticated operations behind enemy lines, declined to comment.

“We might have thought that by doing something dramatic, Hezbollah would reconsider its policy of attacking Israel for a year. That didn’t happen. They said they would continue to do it as long as Hamas continues to do it,” Shine said.
