EU: Flood-stricken European countries are to receive 10 billion euros in support

The sum corresponds to over NOK 115 billion. Von der Leyen announced the support during a visit to Wroclaw, Poland, on Thursday.

– It was heartbreaking to see the devastation, said the head of the European Commission about the consequences of the flood that has affected several central European countries.

The death toll in the flood has risen to at least 24, according to the AP news agency. Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Austria are among the countries affected.

Earlier this week, the European Commission stated that both the flood and the large forest fires in Portugal are the result of “climate collapse”.

– Europe is the continent in the world that warms up the fastest, said Janez Lenarcic, EU Commissioner responsible for crisis management.

Lenarcic added that Europe is particularly vulnerable to the type of extreme weather currently underway.

The triggering cause of the flood is exceptionally heavy rain that began a week ago.

In Central Europe, the floodwaters have now begun to recede. But in the region of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy, heavy rain has led to the evacuation of at least a thousand people.

The rainfall in Northern Italy is due to the same storm that caused torrential rain in Central Europe.
