Ferry tickets: “Green” fuel “brings” increases

If the European ETS (Emissions Trading System) is included in these, the burden on coastal shipping from the new environmental rules will reach 320 million euros in 2031, based on the current prices of the allowances for pollutants, according to a study by IOBE for SEEN .

As he said, “this cost will be passed on to the passenger and the vehicles” and he added that “we are talking about a definite charge on the ferry ticket, otherwise the ferry service will not be able to function”. This cost could be reduced if Greek companies renew their fleet, the average age of which in Greece today reaches 30 years. “The fleet must be renewed”, noted Mr. Theodoratos. “The renewal of the entire fleet will cost around 3 billion euros. The costs are huge, that’s why we have to open financial protocols for the ferry companies”.

D. Theodoratos referred to the need and the possibilities of building new ships in Greece as well, while pointing out that coastal shipping generates a turnover of 1 billion euros per year from charter fees. Included in this money are the fees for the port funds, which amount to around €30,000,000 and could be used to upgrade the ports to make them greener, more accessible and friendlier for ships and passengers.

At the same conference, the general secretary of Shipping and Ports, Dr. Evangelos Kyriazopoulos, stated that the government is trying to keep prices as low as possible, in order to make them affordable for Greeks. However, it said that this year’s costs to finance the barren lines would be slightly less than 2024’s €155m.

However, the ministry and ferry companies seem to be considering strengthening the offer packages and discounts that are mainly aimed at the Greek public. “There are already significant discount policies from the companies, we will act like this for this summer as well”, said Mr. Kyriazopoulos and added:

“We are the first country in the shipping sector in the whole world. This is confirmed by the vote of confidence that our ports and, by extension, our country receive from shipping people, a development that stems from government policy itself.”
