Dengue cases in the Americas rise by almost 50% in an ’emergency’

Dengue outbreaks have created an “emergency” in Mexico, although cases in the epicenters of Argentina and Brazil appear to have stabilized, the head of the Pan American Health Organization said today.

PAHO, a United Nations agency, has confirmed more than 5.2 million dengue cases in the Americas this year, a 48 percent increase from the 3.5 million cases the agency had previously announced late last month.

More than 1,800 people have died from the disease, a number higher than the 1,000-plus deaths last month, for the year to March.

“We have an urgent situation,” Pan American Health Organization Director Yabas Barbosa told a press briefing.

The countries most affected so far, Argentina and Brazil, “still have a very strong dispersion,” Barbosa pointed out, adding that “in recent weeks there seems to be a stabilization or even a decrease” in the countries’ cases. .
