The SCJN will lift the strike on Tuesday

MEXICO CITY (EFE and El Universal).— The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) will unanimously lift the strike that began in protest of the judicial reform, which was approved this week, according to a statement yesterday by Yasmín Esquivel, a minister of the highest court.

“We had a private session in which it was decided that activities will resume next Tuesday, September 17,” the minister told the media upon leaving the SCJN headquarters.

Yasmín pointed out that during this meeting the return to work of judges and magistrates, who have been on strike since August 21, was not discussed, as it is an issue that falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Judicial Council.

“This issue was not raised in the private session of the Court, nothing about the Council or the resumption of activities of judges and magistrates, because it is a matter that is the responsibility of the Council and it will surely make its decision in its next session,” he said.

The minister, who is openly close to the government, also clarified that the decision was taken unanimously by all the ministers who were present at the session, and gave her opinion on a potential return to the activity of judges and magistrates.

“I have always believed that, since justice is a fundamental right, we must be at the service of the people who are requesting justice and that their files can continue with the respective procedures,” said Yasmín, who left the decision in the hands of judges and magistrates who are still speaking out.

Yasmín assured that there had been no comments in the plenary session regarding the judicial reform, which from 2025 will establish popular elections for all judges and the Supreme Court. And, regarding a possible division of its members, she asserted that respect prevailed over individual opinions.

The Court’s decision comes in the week in which the judicial reform proposed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and supported by the elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, was approved in the Senate of the Republic amidst large protests by Mexican judicial workers.
