A step towards the next general elections

The interim government of Haiti announced the creation of a new provisional electoral council to organize the next general elections scheduled for 2026.

The presidential council confirmed the creation of an electoral council made up of seven members, instead of the usual nine, without giving details on the appointment of the two missing members.

The electoral commission, which represents various sectors of Haitian society, has responded to a long-standing request from the international community.

In September 2021, former Prime Minister Ariel Henry dissolved the previous council and Haiti has been without a president ever since.

The last time the Caribbean island held elections was in 2016. Henry had accused the council of being “politicized” and its dissolution earned him accusations of abuse of power.

During his reign, Henry made multiple commitments to hold elections.

Under the pretext of fighting armed gangs that controlled much of the country, especially 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, Henry delayed the process and, amid accusations of wanting to remain in power, an offensive by those same criminal groups against critical government infrastructure forced him to resign.
