The German government does not want to sell any more shares in Commerzbank for the time being. This will reduce the chances of the Italian Unicredit taking over the Frankfurt bank. The Milanese already own nine percent and would like to buy the remaining twelve percent from the government.

The German finance agency announced on Friday that the responsible steering committee had decided in a meeting on Friday not to sell any more shares in Commerzbank until further notice. Commerzbank is a stable and profitable institution. “Its strategy is geared towards independence. The federal government is supporting this by maintaining its stake until further notice.”

This week, Commerzbank asked the federal government to do just that. The board has so far reacted cautiously to the advances from Italy.
