The modernized tanks, now part of the 5th Separate Tank Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, were shown in photos and videos shared by the Ukrainian military.
Tanks are equipped with additional armor and protective screens to counter the increasing threat of enemy FPV drones on the battlefield. Among the improvements is Explosive Reaction Armor (ERA) covering the entire forward projection of the vehicle, including the lower front panel, turret and side hull. The connection between the turret and the body, a vulnerable point, also received additional protection.
An important feature of the upgrade is the grid system, designed to reduce the effectiveness of drones in combat. This security measure provides an additional layer of security for the crew, which faces increasing challenges from the advanced unmanned systems used by Russian forces.
Ukrainian soldiers praised the Leopard 1 tanks very well. “The ideal machine for war. An ideal machine to destroy the enemy,” they noted.
Known for its quality, stability and durability, Leopard 1 tanks have proven their speed and accuracy on the battlefield. The tank can develop up to 70 km/h. speed and conduct accurate fire at a distance of up to 4 km.
The Leopard 1, created during the Cold War, is no longer in service with the German army, but considerable quantities of these tanks can be purchased in the warehouses of partner countries. Admittedly, one challenge remains, securing ammunition for the 105 mm main gun, a problem that could complicate the tank’s continued use in modern combat.
