Hezbollah after explosions in Lebanon

The leader of the Shiite group Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, has called the coordinated explosions of devices across Lebanon a “massacre” and a “declaration of war” against the Lebanese people.

In a speech on Thursday, the leader of the group said that Israel was “deliberately” aiming to kill thousands of people in a matter of minutes. He added that some of the attacks occurred in hospitals, markets, commercial premises and even homes, as well as private vehicles and public roads, where thousands of civilians, including women and children, are located.

“For two days, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the enemy wanted to kill at least 5,000 people in a matter of minutes,” Nasrallah said, adding that the action constituted a “major humanitarian and security blow that is unprecedented in the history of Lebanon” and may be “unprecedented in the world.”

«Criminal assault»

On September 17 and 18, pager explosions occurred across Lebanon, leaving more than 30 people dead and thousands injured. Hezbollah and Lebanese authorities blamed Israel for the “criminal aggression,” and the Shiite group vowed to respond to the attack.

Although Israel has not admitted it was behind the actions, 12 current and former defense and intelligence officials with knowledge of the operation told the NYT that Tel Aviv was indeed behind the first wave of explosions.

Israeli intelligence officials referred to the pagers as “buttons” that could be pressed when the right moment arose, which apparently came this week, the paper reported.
