“The leaders of the two countries will have in-depth exchanges on strategic, general and directional issues related to China-US relations, as well as major issues related to global peace and development,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a regular press conference.
“China is not afraid of competition, but we are against describing China-US relations in the language of competition,” she added.
Mr Biden and Xi Jinping will hold their first meeting in nearly a year on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in California this week.
The two leaders will discuss a range of bilateral, regional and global issues, ways to responsibly manage competition, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
The meeting between Xi Jinping and Mr. Biden follows a series of meetings between senior officials in Beijing, Washington and elsewhere. The last time the leaders of the United States and China met was in November 2022 in Bali.
Their meeting on Wednesday will aim to stabilize relations that have deteriorated sharply since then, a senior US official said. He warned against expecting big results from the upcoming meeting.
Mao Ning on Monday called on the US to “seriously respect China’s reasonable concerns and legitimate development rights, and not just emphasize its own concerns to the detriment of China’s interests.”
“China does not seek to replace the United States, and the United States should not seek to shape or change China either,” she added.
