Düsseldorf. In the specialist shop “Perrücken Wellkamm”, Jörg Wegner-Köhler helps cancer patients in particular to feel well again. He even has an emergency cell phone.
Anyone who wants to go to “Perrücken Wellkamm” has to look a bit. The hair replacement studio is quite hidden on the third floor of the Stapelmann Business Center on Grafenberger Allee. “We don’t need a shop window,” says Jörg Wegner-Köhler. His customers appreciate the discreet, hidden location. For most people, a visit to the wig shop is a difficult task. It is mainly women who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy or another illness.

Master hairdresser Harald Köhler opened the wig shop in 1998. “Back then we were still on Kaiserstrasse,” recalls his business and private partner Jörg Wegner-Köhler, a trained hairdresser who has been working with wigs for 26 years. As a hairdresser he was already close to people, but now it is mainly people suffering from illness that he encounters on a daily basis. “At first it was difficult for me to deal with it.” But then he felt how much strength the feeling of being able to help people gave him. “When things go well, customers come in here crying and leave smiling.”

There is a box of tissues on the table in front of the mirror in the consultation room. “It’s part of the experience that you can cry in peace here,” says the 62-year-old, describing the family atmosphere. There is a sofa and a television in the waiting area, and relaxing music plays in the background. Everyone is allowed to arrive in peace. And when the emotions have calmed down, Jörg Wegner-Köhler begins his work.
“We don’t have sales talks here,” he explains. “I don’t talk anyone into anything.” It’s about customers finding a hair replacement that they really feel comfortable with. There is plenty to choose from. Jörg Wegner-Köhler opens the cupboards in the next room. There are a good 200 wigs stored here. In all possible colors and cuts. There are synthetic hair products that start at around 200 euros and real hair wigs that are priced in the four-digit range. And in addition to what is in stock, lots more can be ordered. In urgent cases, even by express.
The wigs are no longer manufactured in Düsseldorf
The wigs are no longer made in-house. “I learned that during my training, but it’s far too much work.” The Düsseldorf store sources high-quality, hand-knotted goods from Turkey, for example. However, health insurance companies do not cover all quality classes. If you want a premium product, you have to pay extra. “But there are also really good synthetic hair wigs,” says the expert.

One of the first questions Jörg Wegner-Köhler asks is: “Do you want to look like you always did?” That’s exactly what many of the cancer patients want. A hairstyle that doesn’t show how much the disease is affecting the body and soul. But there are also those who suddenly develop a desire for change. To be on the safe side, Wegner-Köhler always orders a wig that looks like the original hairstyle in addition to the desired model. “Because often they don’t want the change in the end,” he says, smiling. He now has a wealth of experience in this area.

Ideally, he sees the customers before chemotherapy begins. “Then it is easier to find the right wig.” And then there are no “emergencies” when the patients lose their hair faster than medically predicted. Jörg Wegner-Köhler has often experienced doctors announcing that the hair will not fall out at all and then it does happen. “I don’t understand that. Why don’t we tell patients in principle that this can happen? And if it turns out differently, then that’s a good thing.”
“Sometimes we are almost psychologists here”

If you need an appointment urgently, you can be seen outside of normal opening hours. There is an emergency cell phone. “I’m always available, even when I’m on vacation,” says the 62-year-old. It has even happened that a customer who was feeling very bad mentally called him in the middle of the night. “Sometimes we’re almost like psychologists here.”

They are also listeners and encouragers. Jörg Wegner-Köhler is convinced of the power of positivity. “Faith moves mountains.” He tries to pass on a little of this wisdom to his customers. “You also need the right attitude to the wig,” he says. Of course, you first have to “look at the foreign body on your head” for ten minutes. And then walk out the door with your head held high.
Wigs in Düsseldorf: The moment when your head goes bald
The most difficult moment is when the remaining hair is cut off and the head becomes bald. “I always advise closing your eyes so that no small hairs get in.” A little trick, because the main reason is that it is usually easier to look in the mirror at the end, without having seen the cutting process. “Many people don’t find it so bad after all.” Sometimes they even laugh at the process. And Jörg Wegner-Köhler always tries to give women something else. After chemotherapy, the hair usually grows back: “The wig is usually only needed for six months.”
