GENEVA (EFE).— A landslide caused by heavy rains in the Upper Valais region (southern Switzerland) left some 2,200 tourists stranded in the Saas Valley, a popular destination in the Swiss Alps, local media reported yesterday.
The landslide blocked the road that connects the Swiss town with neighbouring Stalden, its only land connection with the rest of the Valais canton, to which it belongs, leaving visitors and residents stranded.
According to the local newspaper Blick, most of the affected tourists are of Swiss and German nationality. Local authorities expect the road to remain closed at least until Sunday, so tourists have been offered the option of being evacuated by helicopter, an option that has so far only been offered to workers in the area.
Tourists who wish to leave the Swiss valley will be able to do so on the first evacuation flights scheduled to take place between 4 and 7 p.m. The flights will cost 140 Swiss francs (149 euros) and will take tourists to Stalden, from where they can return to their places of origin by their own means.
Also in southern Switzerland, the ski resort town of Zermatt was cut off in June when a severe storm cut off its roads and rail links.
