In round twenty, Oscar Plates his chance and defeated race leader Charles Leclerc. A spectacular overtaking manoeuvre in turn 1 secured him the first position and not long after his second victory in Formula 1. “After the pit stop I saw half a chance and I knew I had to take it,” the 23-year-old driver explained afterwards. “It was 50/50 whether I would even make the corner,” he laughed.

“The timing of that overtake won me the race,” he continued. “I felt a bit sorry for my race engineer. In my first stint I had already completely burned the tires, so he warned me on the radio not to do that again. I completely ignored him and the next lap I passed him on the inside.”

‘Not without risk’

“It was my last chance,” Oscar Piastri explained. “All respect to Charles (Leclerced.), he raced very honestly. Maybe he was surprised that I made the corner, because that was a pleasant surprise for me too,” joked the McLaren-driver. He almost crashed his MCL38. “It wasn’t without risk, but it was the only way to win the race.”

“After that it was incredibly tough to keep it going for so long,” he added. “The fresh air helped me a bit, but it was still incredibly stressful to keep Leclerc behind me. I made a few more mistakes after that, but they didn’t cost me the race. This is probably one of the best Grands Prix I’ve ever done.”
