Train 1531 (Chalkida – Athens) with a departure time of 5:03 am, carrying 35 passengers, collided with fallen trees between Sfendalis and Afidna stations.
In 2024 alone we have had four collision incidents so far: in January, February, March and Saturday’s. In fact, in the first three, there was also a slight injury to the train driver.
As a result of this, the Council of the Panhellenic Union of Personnel Attraction (PEPE) during the meeting it held on Saturday (14/09) to decide the program of the mobilizations, which is as follows:
-September 24, 2024: Work stoppage from 6 pm until the end of the shift.
-October 10, 2024: 24-hour strike.
A new 24-hour strike is also expected on a date that PEPE will propose to be decided jointly by the Hellenic Train Employee Unions.
The dominant request of the train drivers is to ensure the railway traffic, the operation of basic safety systems, etc. One of the serious problems, which the train drivers had repeatedly complained about including it in the last external court they had sent to the management of OSE and Hellenic Train in in the summer it was that of intense vegetation in the network.
The chronicle of a near-tragedy
At around 09:13, train 1210, bound for the airport, received a departure signal from Athens station. While train 1210 was starting to move towards SS Agios Anargyros, it received an order from SKA to start heading towards SS Athens for train 1307 coming from Kiato.
The Athens Station Master and the train driver of 1210, hearing the departure order given by SKA to train 1307, the former contacted SKA via GSM-R, where an order was immediately given to cancel the movement order of train 1307 towards Athens SS, while at the same time, the driver of 1210 communicated via VHF with the driver of 1307 and informed him that he was already moving towards SS Agios Anargyros.
Almost at the same time, the train driver of train 1307 realized the situation and stopped the train, immediately, as soon as it had exited SS Agios Anargyro and at a distance of 500m. before entering the single line.
Measures by the OSE
As announced yesterday afternoon, the OSE accelerates “the taking of immediate measures that it has already planned with the aim of both preventing similar incidents in the future and generally enhancing the safety of passengers and vehicles”. For this purpose, it recommends a new Department of Greenery & Environment in the Organization with the purpose of planning, procedures and implementation of the cleaning projects of native vegetation and the cutting of trees along the entire railway network of the country.
