The Ukrainian invasion of Kursk, which surprised the Russian army in August after two and a half years of war, is the first by a foreign army in Russia since World War II and is a defeat for Vladimir Putin. Kyiv controls an area of about 1,000 square kilometers and almost 100 communities.
In mid-September, Russia launched a counterattack and claimed it was making progress, but according to Kiev, that operation has stalled.
The Russians “tried to flank us but we stopped them, the situation has stabilized and today everything is under control,” Ukrainian regional administration spokesman Oleksiy Dmytraskivsky told AFP. “They had some minor successes but that success has now turned into a near encirclement” of their forces, he argued. “The Russians entered a community. They started fighting for another community, but that’s it,” he explained.
However, the Russian counter-offensive has not yet failed and Moscow says it has launched new offensives to recapture lost territory. “The Russian operation in Kursk is ongoing, so it is too early to say that it has completely failed,” a senior Ukrainian official who asked not to be named commented in a different tone.
Representative Dmytraskifsky also said that “many thousands” of Russian citizens are in Ukrainian-controlled territory. These are mostly old people, but there are also some children. A woman gave birth to a baby boy who is “in good health,” he added.
Dmytraskifsky accused the Russian military of airstrikes against Russian territory in the zone controlled by Ukrainians. At least 23 civilians have been killed by such shelling since late August, he said.
AFP was unable to confirm the truth of these statements.
The spokesman denied that Ukrainians mistreat civilians. “They receive water, food, bread, the soldiers do not insult them,” he said, clarifying, however, that shops and pharmacies are not working.
In its own statement, the Russian military today assured that it is continuing the operation in some zones of the Kursk region and repelling Ukrainian attacks in others.
Earlier, Ukraine announced that it had destroyed with drones a cache of ballistic missiles, bombs and artillery shells in western Russia. That warehouse was located in Toropets, Tver region, about 400 kilometers northwest of Moscow, a source in Ukraine’s SBU security service said.
Videos posted on social networking sites and aired by Russian and Ukrainian media show successive, spectacular explosions and thick smoke. AFP was unable to confirm the authenticity of the footage. Russian authorities admitted the fire was caused by a drone strike, without specifying the target.
The governor of the Tver region, Igor Rudenia, ordered a “partial evacuation” but a few hours later allowed residents to return to their homes.
Russia’s health ministry said 13 people were hospitalized following the attack, but their lives were not in danger.
