Palliative care patients who come to live out their final moments at Maison Michel-Sarrazin will experience a more peaceful end of life, thanks to major expansion and renovation work. This will improve the comfort of patients and facilitate the work of the staff on site.
Doubled capacity, the installation of an elevator and self-sufficiency in caring for patients are among the major elements of the major transformation of the palliative care centre on Chemin Saint-Louis. The work allows for a more comprehensive range of services, whether physical, psychological, social, spiritual or artistic. There is even a hair salon on site. Families also benefit from an outdoor terrace, a new dining room and practical facilities, such as a bedroom and laundry room if relatives need to stay on site.
The total represents investments of $9 million, entirely assumed by the Fondation de la Maison Michel-Sarrazin.
These improvements and changes were more than necessary, as the Maison Michel-Sarrazin (MMS) had not undergone any facelift until now, and will be celebrating its 40th anniversary very soon.
“For the last 40 years, you had to put in a little botox and a little enhancement,” says Brigitte Laflamme, general director of the MMS, with a laugh.

A huge challenge
This work, which greatly improves the functional aspect of the centre, was highly anticipated, continues Ms. Laflamme. And the biggest challenge was to carry out this major work while continuing to offer services.

Present for the occasion, the minister responsible for the Capitale-Nationale region, Jonatan Julien, stressed the importance of the last moments of a loved one, he who accompanied his grandmother when she died at the MMS several years ago.
“I know the hurdles that had to be overcome to achieve this success,” he said. “A quality of life is also a quality of end of life,” he added.

Launch of the fundraising campaign
The inauguration of the new MMS spaces was also an opportunity to officially launch the fundraising campaign. Under the theme “Ends of life are sweeter at home,” the fundraiser raised nearly $5.8 million. The goal is to reach $12 million by 2027.
Denis Ricard, co-chair of the campaign and also president and CEO of IA Financial Group, wanted to reiterate the importance of dying with dignity.
“It is a hope that we all share,” he emphasizes. “The Maison Michel-Sarrazin is the very essence of compassion and human dignity.”
