“According to yesterday’s news, two more citizens have registered that they need help to return to Lithuania, but the proportion of those people who registered at the beginning of the war or at the end of last week has decreased significantly. We evacuated 152 people, and after our repatriation flights, 50 people registered to go to Lithuania. As I mentioned, it decreased to two yesterday,” V. Vitkauskas told LRT radio.
The Lithuanian military plane “Spartan”, which brought Lithuanians back from the war zone, was on duty in Turkey until October 15.
According to V. Vitkauskas, although the possibilities of flights from Israel have decreased, certain airlines operate them.
“Our embassy works 24/7 in Israel and helps our citizens find ways to get back to Lithuania. We have a number of manifestations of international cooperation, we can consult and ask to accept on military aircraft persons who need such help”, said the head of the NKVC.
According to him, it is possible that the two mentioned persons who needed help have already arrived.
On October 7, the Palestinian group “Hamas” unexpectedly attacked Israel, invading its territory and carrying out rocket attacks. Israel carried out retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip and also cut off the supply of food, fuel, water and other supplies to the Gaza Strip, creating a humanitarian crisis for the Palestinian civilians living there.
The conflict has killed thousands of people in both Israel and the Gaza Strip. Lithuanian representatives emphasize Israel’s right to defend itself, but in accordance with the principles of international humanitarian law.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas has been involved in several wars with Israel since taking over the Gaza Strip in 2007. The group has been recognized as a terrorist by Israel, the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom and some other countries.

As the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas continues to escalate, Lithuania has been working tirelessly to repatriate its citizens stranded in the war-torn region. In an update on the situation, V. Vitkauskas, the head of the National Coordination Center for Crisis Management (NKVC), shared the latest developments with LRT radio.
Decrease in Registration for Repatriation
According to Vitkauskas, the number of people registering for repatriation to Lithuania has decreased significantly since the beginning of the war. Yesterday, only two more citizens registered for assistance to return home, a marked drop from the initial surge in registrations. Despite this decline, the Lithuanian government remains committed to helping its citizens in need.
Evacuation Efforts
To date, Lithuania has successfully evacuated 152 people from the conflict zone. Following the repatriation flights, 50 people registered to return to Lithuania, with two additional registrations made yesterday. The Lithuanian military plane “Spartan” had been stationed in Turkey until October 15, awaiting potential evacuations.
Alternative Flights from Israel
While the possibilities of flights from Israel have decreased, certain airlines still operate flights from the country. Vitkauskas emphasized that the Lithuanian embassy in Israel is working around the clock to assist citizens in finding ways to return home. International cooperation has also been instrumental in facilitating evacuations, with Lithuania consulting with other countries to accept citizens on military aircraft.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza Strip
The ongoing conflict has resulted in a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, with thousands of Palestinians affected by the Israeli military’s retaliatory strikes. Lithuania has reiterated its support for Israel’s right to defend itself, provided it adheres to international humanitarian law.
