“We have a monitoring and filtering mechanism. We receive confidential information from members of the public,” Colonel Aswin explained. “Some of those arrested had pledged allegiance to IS.”
“One of those arrested is a militant belonging to the same terrorist group that attacked Wiranto,” the source said, referring to Indonesia’s then-security minister, who has only one name and was stabbed by two radicalized ISIS assailants in 2019 and underwent surgery after the attack.
The police chief said the militants were angry over Pope Francis’ visit to Jakarta’s Istiqlal mosque, the largest in Southeast Asia, and the government’s request to television networks to refrain from broadcasting the customary “azan” (Islamic call to prayer) while the papal event was being broadcast live.
Television channels replaced the Azan broadcasts with a continuous text.
