Anyone expecting an uncompromising metal battle axe behind Tomasz “Orion” Wróblewski’s signature bass might be a little surprised. In the test, the four-string ESP LTD Orion 4 Black Blast turns out to be more of an ultra-fat-sounding jazz bass that can be used in all musical styles without any problems.
Of course, metal sounds are possible with the right equipment, but due to the classic design with the tried and tested ingredients, the bass mainly delivers typical jazz bass sounds, which are reproduced very voluminously and richly thanks to the great Nordstrand Big Splits. The ESP LTD Orion 4 Black Blast is therefore more of an all-purpose weapon than a pure metal machine!
The matte black four-string also scores points in terms of playing comfort: the slim neck fits well in the hand, the range is usable right up to the last fret, and the bass hangs relatively well balanced on the strap. For my taste, however, the weight is a bit too high for a four-string, and the slight bumps on the varnished back of the neck don’t really look good on a bass in this price range.
In view of the criticisms mentioned in the test, the bass is, in my opinion, at the upper end of the price range – even if it is otherwise very well made, is equipped with some very high-quality components and is delivered in a sturdy case.
