Asuncion, IP Agency.- This Saturday, the official opening of the first free public space for Early Childhood Development (ECD) for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) took place at the District Hospital of Presidente Franco, Alto Paraná department.
Health Minister María Teresa Barán highlighted the inter-institutional coordination and encouraged staff to provide quality care with warmth and empathy.
“We always say that we want to build a more inclusive Paraguay and we know that autism is a condition and we have to work, above all, with a very large barrier, which is ignorance. If we know what autism is, if we know how to treat a person with autism, the lives of them and their families will be very different,” the minister stressed.
The DIT program aims to contribute to improving the levels of cognitive, emotional and physical development of children under 5 years of age, detecting developmental disorders early and facilitating timely access to interventions for their treatment.
Anaer Arevalo, coordinator, pointed out the importance of family support: “If dad, mom, aunt, or caregiver are there, we want them to come because they all have to speak the same language. Talking about autism is talking about a different lifestyle, it is talking about changes and modifications so that my family is more harmonious and has a better quality of life.”
The facility will provide multidisciplinary care, led by professionals specializing in early development, thereby strengthening social inclusion in the tenth department.
Zunilda Prieto, mother of a 5-year-old boy with autism, said with tears in her eyes that she was happy and grateful to be able to access this space for free, something that she thought was impossible and that will now allow her child to continue receiving professional support to improve his quality of life.
The space was refurbished with resources from Itaipu Binacional, the Tesãi Foundation and the ongoing support of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare through the hiring of specialist doctors.
