For the past two days, the hashtag ‘Save Karunjhar‘, meaning ‘Save Karunjhar’, has been trending on social media to save the unique mountain range Karunjhar in the Thar desert of Sindh.
With the hashtag ‘Save Karunjhar’ launched on December 11, the world’s ‘World Mountain Day’, more than 61 posts have been made on Facebook so far, with users sharing the Karunjhar mountain, the rivers formed there. , the greenery that grows after the rains, the chirand birds that live there are sharing pictures and videos demanding that this unique mountain range be saved.
Social media users are demanding that the process of indiscriminate extraction of colored granite stones from there should be stopped immediately.
On July 23, the caretaker government of Sindh had issued advertisements in newspapers to extract granite stones from Karunjhar mountain, against which Advocate Shankar Lal, a resident of Diplo in Tharparkar district and a lawyer in Hyderabad, appealed to the Sindh High Court, Hyderabad. I filed a petition before the Division Bench.
On October 19, a two-member division bench comprising Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui and Justice Arshad Hussain Khan of the Hyderabad Circuit of the Sindh High Court, after completing the hearing on the petition filed against the cutting of the Karunjhar Hills, gave a detailed 15-page decision to the Sindh government. A total ban on cutting of Karunjhar was imposed with the immediate rejection of the auction of quarrying of granite on the Karunjhar hill.
The court has ordered to protect the Karunjhar mountain range under international guidelines, saying that under the law it is a single mountain range which cannot be divided into parts for harvesting.
Apart from this, the Sindh government was ordered to submit a report within three months while ordering plantation at Karunjhar.
The Sindh government has challenged the decision of the High Court in the Supreme Court, the first hearing of which is today, December 13.
Ahead of the hearing, social media users have been calling for the protection of Karunjhar with the hashtag ‘Save Karunjhar’.

In his Facebook post, a user named Dhanesh Kumar wrote: ‘Two days after Paharad Alami, a petition against the cutting of Karunjhar is being heard in the country’s highest court. Let us promise that we will stand by our mountain.’
Al Harkiu Kosu wrote: ‘Karunjhar supports more than 75 thousand people, animals and birds. Karunjhar is the last refuge of many rare animals and our national heritage. We hope that the court will do justice to us.’
Sanal Khoso posted on Karunjhar with his picture: ‘Civilized countries give life to their animals, mountains, like humans. They also make laws regarding this. But here, mountains like Karunjhar are bid to be harvested and humans are not valued.’
The Karunjhar range is located in the Parker part of Tharparkar district. Across the Indian border from this unique hilly border lies the run-off of the Indian state of Gujarat.
The confluence of ancient human civilizations of Indian Gujarat, Rajasthan and the Mehran Valley, Karunjhar is spread over an area of 23 km which is richer in wildlife, herb and plant species than any other region of Sindh and potentially It can be given the status of National Park.

According to a study by the Sindh Irrigation Development Authority (SAZDA), the mountain range recharges the first of the three layers of groundwater. According to Bharu Mal Amrani: ‘There are many ancient caves in the Karunjhar mountain including Andharu Ojaro Cave, Piprio, Godaro River, Bhatiani River and Cow Mukhi in the caves found in the sites of Early Humans, human figures, human hands and The images of feet and animals testify that humans were living here in ancient times.
