RAFAEL Nadal has withdrawn from the Laver Cup, citing the need for other players to help Team Europe win.

The 38-year-old Spaniard has not played since losing to compatriot Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s doubles quarter-finals at the 2024 Paris Olympics in August.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner did not confirm any injuries or health issues but confirmed that 2024 would be his last season as a tennis player.

“I regret to say that I will not take part in the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” said Nadal.

“This is a team competition. To really support the European teams, I have to do my best for them. The best at the moment is another player who can help them win,” he continued.

The Laver Cup, which pits European teams against World teams, will be held in Berlin starting September 20.

Having hoped to play the full 2024 season, Nadal has only played in one Grand Slam tournament, the French Open, losing in the first round to Alexander Zverev.

After deciding to skip Wimbledon to focus on the 2024 Paris Olympics, Nadal suffered a thigh injury and was eliminated in the second round after losing to Novak Djokovic, who eventually won the gold medal.

“I have a lot of memories of playing in the Laver Cup and I’m really looking forward to playing with my teammates and with Bjorn who will act as captain for the last time,” said Nadal, who has previously played in three Laver Cup events.

“I wish the European teams all the best and will support them from afar,” he concluded. (bbc/Z-1)
