The mayor returned this question for consideration again, because at the last meeting the council approved the proposal of the Lithuanian Polish Election Action-Union of Christian Families (LLRA-KŠS) that the compensation should reach 25 euros, although it had previously expressed support for the project of R. Duchnevičius.
The possibility for the mayor to veto council decisions is provided for in the Law on Local Self-Government.
On Friday, the proposal of Social Democrat R.Duchnevičius was supported by 10, while 17 local politicians out of 27 did not support it. Most of the council members belong to LLRA-KŠS.
Before the vote, the representatives of LLRA-KŠS said that the money should be invested in the construction of new kindergartens, and not in compensations. The faction’s representative, Robert Rackiewicz, also said that the mayor’s veto is “political corruption”.
“In my opinion, the mayor’s veto, as it were, pushing this project once again confirms to me that there is a certain gratitude to the Landsberg clan for their support during the elections. You can’t call it anything else, there is simply political corruption here,” said the politician.
He was referring to the business of Austėja Landsbergienė, the wife of conservative leader Gabrielias Landsbergis – private educational institutions.
At that time, the representative of the Social Democratic Party, Ruslanas Baronov, urged the representatives of the LLRA-KŠS to be consistent.
“Despite the resounding rhetoric of colleagues, on February 8, 2023, the same payment to the Landsberg clan was raised in the Vilnius city municipality, so to speak, from 100 to 120 euros. (…) Not one (LLRA-KŠS member – BNS) voted against, not a single member of the LLRA-KŠS faction abstained,” said the politician.
“In one municipality, we support the Landsberg clan, in another, we raise a flag and wave against it. Colleagues, let’s be consistent,” he added.
The mayor based his decision to increase payments on the data of the municipality’s Education Department at the beginning of September.
According to them, the Vilnius district did not provide preschool or pre-school education for 165 children whose declared place of residence is in the Vilnius district municipality, nor was any alternative offered to them.
