The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given the green light for the use of special hearing enhancement software that can be used with the new AirPods Pro hearing aids as a hearing aid.
This is the first software and the first headphones of their kind (normal wearable headphones) that will be able to be used without a doctor’s prescription as an FDA-approved hearing aid.
Earlier this week, Apple announced that AirPods Pro 2 can be “transformed” into a personalized hearing aid through an upcoming software update that will amplify specific sounds in real time, including parts of speech or elements of the user’s environment.
These new features will be available in the fall for AirPods Pro 2 users in more than 100 countries and regions, the company announced.
Once installed and adjusted to the user’s hearing needs, the software allows versions of the AirPods Pro to function as an OTC hearing aid aimed at amplifying sounds for people 18 and older with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss, the regulator said health.
“Hearing loss is a major public health issue that affects millions of Americans,” said Michelle Tarver, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
Endorsing an over-the-counter hearing aid software promotes the availability, accessibility and acceptance of hearing support, he added.
