MEXICO CITY.- During his usual “morning” conference, the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorreported on Tuesday that his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvawill travel to Mexico on September 30 to say goodbye to him and attend the inauguration of the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum PardoOctober 1st.
“He’s coming, he tells me, on the 30th (of September) because he’s going to be here and he’s coming to the president’s inauguration, he’s coming to talk and he’s staying, the truth is it’s to say goodbye, other presidents are also coming,” said López Obrador.
The last time Lula visited Mexico was in March 2022, before Brazil’s presidential elections in October of that year.
On that occasion, he met with López Obrador at the National Palace, who stressed that it was a “fraternal meeting with Lula,” with whom they are “united by the brotherhood” of both “peoples” and “the fight for equality and justice.”
The inauguration ceremony of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has sparked controversy due to the invitation to the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, but the Government of Mexico and the transition team of the elected president have defended that it is the country’s tradition to invite all the governments with which there are diplomatic relations.
López Obrador now argued that it will be up to Juan Ramón de la Fuente, head of Sheinbaum Pardo’s transition team and his next foreign minister, to “announce who has confirmed that they will attend.”
The president said that “many heads of state, presidents, and prime ministers will be there” after the victory of Claudia Sheinbaum, who won the June 2 election with almost 36 million votes, nearly 60% of the total, and will be the first female president of Mexico.
“Because it is an event, it is quite an event, the first time in centuries a woman, an exceptional woman, there is no leader in the world with such an academic level, I say this with all due respect, I do not want to hurt anyone’s feelings,” said López Obrador.
