Petro opts for a quiet change of Cabinet

Colombian President Gustavo Petro appointed four new ministers on Monday and said he made these changes to his cabinet because he is “fixing mistakes” and seeking to “innovate” in his fight to achieve “change” in the country.

“Why is there a drastic cabinet change almost halfway through the Government? In reality, it is because we are correcting errors and detecting strategic problems.“the president said during the ceremony, held at the Casa de Nariño, the presidential palace.

«Here we have to innovate, that is why I am changing the cabinet with people – I warn you right away, because you can regret it and you still have time, otherwise you have to hold on to the strong chair – who I hope, women and men, will fight for change. It must be fought and even from an international and global perspective.“, he added.

Petro appointed the new Ministers of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo, who replaced Luis Fernando Velasco; of Transportation, María Constanza García, replacing William Camargo; of Agriculture, Martha Carvajalino, who occupies the position held by Jhenifer Mojica; and of Justice, Ángela María Buitrago, replacing Néstor Osuna.

The president also appointed the new directors of the National Agency for the Legal Defense of the State, César Palomino, and of the Unit for the Comprehensive Care and Reparation of Victims, Lilia Solano.

These changes come just weeks before Petro reaches the halfway point of his term, on August 7.

For the moment, the president only retains four ministers from the beginning of his government, on August 7, 2022: Iván Velásquez, in Defense; Gloria Inés Ramírez, in Labor; Susana Muhamad, in Environment and Sustainable Development, and Catalina Velasco, in Housing, City and Territory.
