PRESIDENT Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the 21st National Sports Week (PON) in Aceh – North Sumatra (Sumut) at the Harapan Bangsa Stadium, Banda Aceh, on Monday (9/9).
Jokowi expressed his gratitude to all levels of the Aceh and North Sumatra Regional Governments for organizing the XXI PON. Because, starting the event, Indonesian athletes will be born who are expected to be able to excel in the world arena.
“This PON is an event to produce more of the nation’s best athletes, produce more world record breakers, produce more gold medal candidates at the Asian Games, Sea Games, and even at the Olympics,” said Jokowi in his remarks, quoting a live broadcast from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel, Monday (9/9).
Jokowi also invited, this PON is used as an event to further unite the nation. Therefore, he appealed to all athletes to be able to participate in the match by always respecting sportsmanship.
“I strongly urge you to uphold sportsmanship and fair play. Let us all celebrate this National Sports Week with a spirit of togetherness, with a spirit of sportsmanship and joy to carve out achievements that make the country proud,” said Jokowi.
Meanwhile, Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Dito Ariotedjo said that PON XXI was the first to be held in two regions. This created challenges in its implementation.

For PON XXI Aceh-North Sumatra, Dito continued, it carries ‘Let’s Exercise: United We Are Champions’. The theme was also embedded to commemorate the 41st National Sports Day (Haornas).
“This is intended, through the momentum of Haornas and PON XXI, our society will be more fond of sports, thereby improving fitness. In addition, PON is expected to be used as a tool to unite the nation and a means of improving national sports,” said Dito.
“The big goal of this is to realize a healthy and successful Indonesia at world level,” he added.

At the opening ceremony of PON XXI Aceh-Sumut, the Bali Province Contingent started the athlete parade. There were 20 representatives from Bali Province who were the first to parade according to the alphabetical order of the provinces.
The athlete parade ended with the host athletes from Aceh, each province represented by 20 athletes. Next, the rock climbing athlete who won the 2024 Paris Olympics gold medal, Veddriq Leonardo, read the athlete’s pledge. Meanwhile, the referee’s pledge was read by K. S. Henry Indrayani Oka from the shooting sport.
