Authorities reported that A Florida woman was arrested for hit and run after hitting a motorcyclist in West Melbourne.
Rebekah Mackenzie Tate, 23, allegedly hit a 34-year-old motorcyclist so hard early Sunday morning that his helmet flew off and landed in the middle of the road.
Tate, who lists herself as a professional ballroom dancer, harpist and pianist on her Instagram, She was charged with leaving an accident with serious bodily harm and tampering with evidence in a criminal case.according to prison records.
“Instead of remaining on scene or calling 911, Tate can be seen walking away with the motorcycle still strapped to the front of his vehicle,” a West Melbourne Police Department news release said.
He then parked his vehicle in a parking lot and She was seen on surveillance video trying to get the motorcycle out from under her car before someone in another car picked it up.police said.
She was booked into Brevard County Jail on Wednesday on $17,500 bail and bonded out Friday while awaiting trial.
Tate pleaded not guilty on Thursday, according to the New York Post.
A woman who said she was the victim’s mother wrote a comment on the police department’s Facebook post about the arrest.
“I don’t care at all about her circumstances. She left my son to die in the middle of the street. She was caught on video tampering with evidence and trying to hide. My son was in the ICU on a ventilator,” she wrote.
She added that it could take her son six months to a year to “walk normally again, if he ever does. I have no compassion for this woman and I hope to see her pay for what she did to my son.”
Billy LeBlanc, a DoorDash driver who found the victim lying in the road after the crash, told FOX 35 he helped the victim until paramedics arrived.
“I’m glad I was there at the right time and I was able to help him,” LeBlanc said. “I’m glad he’s alive. I’m glad he’s a strong guy, obviously, because she hit him hard.”
FOX 35 identified the victim as John Powellciting friends.
Powell left the ICU on Thursday, the outlet reported.
Tate is expected back in court on Oct. 1.
