Red Bull Salzburg beat Danish champions Sønderjyske 6:2 and can now think about the round of 16 of the Champions League. This time Salzburg took advantage of the strange power play rule.
Salzburg coach Oliver David was asked a month ago what the enormous preparation program, including international matches and four Champions Hockey League games, means for Salzburg, and he said with a smile: “We will definitely be in good shape.”
That is already true: In the second match of the Champions League, the Danish title holders Sønderjyske were literally run over 6:2 (1:0, 4:0, 1:2) in the Volksgarten on Sunday. While Salzburg were unable to reward themselves against the Swedes on Friday, they did so after just 52 seconds on Sunday. Andrew Rowe, who came from Ingolstadt in the summer, scored his first competitive goal to make it 1-0 – and set the course for victory. The guests were (apart from a few power play scenes) a class weaker than Salzburg in every respect – even though Denmark, unlike Austria, qualified for the 2026 Olympic Games last week.
Dennis Robertson increased the lead to 2-0 at the start of the second period and then Salzburg were able to benefit from the strange power play rule that is only used in the Champions Hockey League: If a goal is scored when the opponent is on the power play, the player sitting in the penalty box is not allowed back on the ice. When Alexander Wiklund had to go to the penalty box for two minutes for tripping, Andrew Rowe (after 45 seconds) and Peter Schneider (after 1:55 minutes) scored to make it 3-0 and 4-0. That is exactly what Salzburg suffered on Friday when Skellefteå scored twice when Robertson was penalized.
At the beginning of the final third, Salzburg took their foot off the gas a little in front of 1,891 spectators who preferred to spend the last day of summer in the ice rink. Christensen managed to improve the score before Lucas Thaler (46th) equalized the balance of power with the goal of the evening into the top corner.
Coach Oliver David was quite satisfied with the team’s entry into the Champions League. “Yes, it feels like two wins, even if we weren’t able to score against the Swedes. But we can’t just look at the scoreboard, we have to maintain the hunger that we had on Friday in particular.” The guests were also a better opponent than the result would suggest.
