Bontus the Champion Sailor Charts a Course for Victory in the Traunsee Medal Series

The 23-year-old from Lower Austria fought his way to fifth place overall in the Kite Foil World Series with four top-five placings on Saturday and is now in the quarter-finals on Sunday. Fellow countrywoman Alina Kornelli, who is fourth overall, will also be there on the final day.

“Today was a successful day for me. I had to give up in one race after a foul on Max Maeder. Otherwise I was able to achieve top results throughout,” said Bontus. “Maybe I can catch up like I did at the Olympics.” Maeder was in a class of his own on Saturday in Ebensee. The Olympic bronze medalist from Singapore won five of the six races – a total of eleven of the twelve qualifying races.

“Then the podium is certainly within reach”

Kornelli successfully defended her fourth place from Friday and will now move on to the semifinals on Sunday. “The top four girls are on a very similar level. You just can’t make any mistakes tomorrow and then you’ll definitely be on the podium,” said Kornelli, who finished eleventh in Paris.
