Clara Fuentes gave Venezuela its second gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games on Thursday, after winning the women’s para power event, -50 kilogram (kg) category.
She won the gold medal at the Arena Porte de La Chapelle, where she lifted 124 kilos to set a Paralympic record and spark jubilation among the members of the national team.
She was followed by China’s Jinping Xiao, who lifted 119 kg in a competition in which nine women took part. The podium was completed by Olivia Broome, representing Great Britain, who also registered 119, but was not favoured by the tiebreaker criterion.
Honor
Fuentes joined runner Enderson Santos as the only Venezuelans who, so far, have won gold medals in the universal competition taking place in the capital of France.
Santos took home the top prize last weekend, winning the 400-meter (m) flat event, T11 category (visually impaired), which was part of the para-athletics calendar.
As of September 5, 2024, the Venezuelan delegation had a total of three awards, as it also won a silver medal through Lisbeli Vera, who came second in the 400 m dash, T47 version, which brings together athletes with limited arm mobility or loss of a limb.
