Pulp and paper manufacturer Kami Shoji will incorporate ABB‘s cellulose fiber testing equipment. According to a statement released by ABB, the Japanese papermaker has acquired the L&W Fiber Tester Plus automated testing solution to measure and analyze the quality and morphology of cellulose fibers in its mills.
The specialty paper manufacturer expects to optimize the development processes of new products based on cellulose nanofibers, the so-called CNF papers, to create specialty papers with structural, insulation and soundproofing applications.
“Kami Shoji uses the L&W Fiber Tester Plus extensively to establish criteria for developing CNF papers under different fiber conditions,” said Shosaku Kashiwada, acting director of development at Kami Shoji, in the statement. “We are very pleased with the equipment, which performs valuable measurements for the development of new types of CNFs.”
According to the statement, ABB’s testing device will perform automated morphological analysis of fibers. The company claims that the L&W Fiber Tester Plus can observe an average of 20,000 fibers in just ten minutes, something impossible for manual inspection with an optical microscope. The equipment is also capable of making multiple measurements, including fiber perimeter.
Using image analysis, the tester measures length and width, fines, shape factor, microfibrillation and fiber roughness. The equipment also has software and hardware modules for making crill measurements, receptacle cells, minishives, local deformations and fiber mix calculations. It also has a deaeration process for more accurate measurements.
“Kami Shohi’s paper experts will benefit from optimized operating conditions in their plants, which will lead to improved quality control, productivity and production,” said Hiromichi Yoda, head of ABB’s Process Industries Division.
