Already a three-time winner of the Vuelta, Primoz Roglic has put an option on a fourth title after his solo victory at the summit of the Alto de Moncavillo, where he had already won in 2020. A new success which allows the Slovenian two days from the end to take the lead in the general classification with a large lead over his rivals and his new runner-up: David Gaudu, 2nd in the stage.
Primoz Roglic’s plan was very clear, and he could hardly have executed it better. On a route that he knew perfectly well, having already won at the top of the Alto de Moncavillo four years before this 19th stage of the Vuelta, which was therefore played out at the very top of this climb, which was certainly dizzying but without the slightest secret for the Slovenian. After asking his teammates from the Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team to set a hell of a pace very quickly, as had already been the case during the previous high-altitude stages of this Tour of Spain, Roglic was able to express himself in this role of race boss that suits him best. Not yet in red but very quickly a virtual new leader, the triple winner of the event, more than ever on the verge of adding his name to the prize list for the fourth time, found himself at the front, almost without realising it, first alongside two of his team-mates then very quickly alone while behind, Ben O’Connor, despite enormous efforts (and a lot of work from Valentin Paret-Peintre once again) to stay at least in contact with the other podium contenders, had already understood that he would not spend a fourteenth day in red.
Gaudu, new dolphin!
Two days before the final finish of this Vuelta and on the eve of a last chance for the rivals of the leader of the Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team on the terrible stage of Saturday, “Rogla” had decided to strike hard. Not only did he win this 19th stage, giving himself a 15th stage victory on the Tour of Spain, but he also applied himself to creating big gaps. After this superb number in the last climb, Roglic the repeat offender, has in fact 46 seconds of advantage on his new runner-up: David Gaudu. Impressive in the final, the small French climber of the Groupama-FDJ team beat all his competitors – Roglic excepted – and in particular Enric Mas, whom he overtook in the last meters, to achieve the most beautiful operation of the day. Even if the big blow – and a double blow to boot – of this 19th stage is obviously to be put down to the triple winner of the race, and once again boss of this Vuelta.

Primoz Roglic Strikes Again: Slovenian Cyclist Takes Lead in General Classification at Vuelta a España

The 19th stage of the Vuelta a España has come to a close, and Primoz Roglic has once again demonstrated his dominance in the world of professional cycling. The Slovenian rider, who has already won the Vuelta three times, has taken the lead in the general classification with a stunning solo victory at the summit of the Alto de Moncavillo.
Roglic’s Plan Comes to Fruition
Roglic’s plan was simple yet effective: to take the lead in the general classification with a strong performance on the climb. He knew the route well, having won at the top of the Alto de Moncavillo four years ago, and he executed his plan to perfection. With the help of his teammates from the Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe team, Roglic set a blistering pace from the start, gradually dropping his rivals one by one as the climb went on.
The Slovenian rider, who has won 15 stages on the Vuelta, found himself at the front of the pack, first alongside two of his teammates and then alone as he crossed the finish line. Behind him, Ben O’Connor, who had worn the leader’s jersey for 14 days, lost significant time and surrendered the lead to Roglic.
Gaudu Takes Second Place
The big winner of the day, besides Roglic, was David Gaudu, who took second place on the stage and moved up to second overall. Gaudu, who has been quietly building his form throughout the race, has now become Roglic’s main challenger for the overall victory.
With two days to go, Roglic’s lead looks almost insurmountable, but Gaudu will be determined to attack and try to claw back some time. Saturday’s stage, which features several tough climbs, will be his last chance to make a move and try to overcome Roglic’s advantage.
The Vuelta a España continues to thrill, with drama and excitement at every turn. Can Gaudu pull off an upset, or will Roglic cruise to his fourth title? Stay tuned to find out.
