Madrid‘s mayor on Wednesday criticised Vinicius Junior after the Real Madrid star said Spain should not host the 2030 World Cup if the country does not change its approach to racism in football.
Interviewed by CNN, the striker said that “I hope that Spain can evolve and understand how serious it is to insult a person because of their skin colour” and that “if things do not evolve before 2030, the venue of the World Cup will have to be changed.”
In response, Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said Vinicius’s remarks could undermine Spain’s status as host of the tournament and generalise the country as racist.
“We are all aware that there are indeed racist episodes in society and that we have to work very hard to eliminate these racist episodes,” said Martínez-Almeida. “It is deeply unfair to Spain and, particularly, to Madrid, to say that it is a racist society.”
Vinicius, who is black, told CNN that he loves living in Madrid, adding that “in Spain, most people are not racist, it’s a minority.”
He added that “little by little” racism will be reduced in Spanish football.
Vinicius has been the victim of a series of racist abuse since signing for Real Madrid in 2018. He received widespread support from Spanish society after being abused during a La Liga match in Valencia last year, prompting calls for change in the country’s fight against racism.
