Severe Cold Wave in Afghanistan Causes Tragic Loss of Life
September 5, 2024
The severe cold wave continues to impact Afghanistan, claiming the lives of at least 70 individuals.
Amid decades of conflict and ongoing economic struggles, the Afghan population now faces the harsh realities of extreme weather conditions.
Since the 10th of this month, temperatures have plummeted across various regions of Afghanistan, with some areas experiencing lows of minus 33 degrees Celsius, accompanied by significant snowfall. The inadequate housing and resources available to impoverished families have made survival increasingly difficult.
According to Afghanistan’s Ministry of Environmental Disasters, at least 70 people have succumbed to the extreme cold. Additionally, it is estimated that around 70,000 pets have perished over the past eight days due to the harsh weather conditions.
The Taliban government’s inability to access frozen Afghan funds has exacerbated the situation. They have called for the restoration of these funds, emphasizing their necessity for disaster response efforts.
Previously, the Afghan public faced significant challenges from floods caused by monsoon rains and devastating earthquakes, resulting in more than 100 lives lost and the destruction of approximately 1,000 homes.
The United Nations has consistently urged international communities to provide financial assistance to address the pressing needs related to natural disasters, substandard living conditions, and widespread poverty.
