Fredis Beleris: A New Chapter After Imprisonment
Table of Contents
After 16 months of imprisonment, New Democracy MEP Fredis Beleris has regained his freedom. Speaking online from Heimarra, he shared insights with SKAI on his ordeal and future plans.
“I want to thank you all for your support during my imprisonment. After 16 months, I feel a sense of redemption that this suffering has come to an end,” said Mr. Beleris. He emphasized that his legal battle continues and announced his intention to appeal to all levels of Albanian justice, although he expressed a lack of hope and confidence in the system.
Additionally, he plans to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), seeking vindication in his role as an MEP. “I want to thank Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for supporting my candidacy, and the Greek people for their trust in me and for believing in the struggle of the Greek national minority,” he stated.
Celebrations in Heimarra
Following his release, Heimarra held a joyous celebration filled with dances and songs. Mr. Beleris remarked, “People are excited and proud. It is one of the few times in history that this community feels supported. In this struggle, we have the backing of the Greek government, the Greek prime minister, all Greek parties, and the Greek people.” He emphasized the residents’ fundamental rights, including self-determination, property ownership, and fair electoral practices, which are sadly lacking under the current Albanian government.
Looking Ahead
Fredis Beleris articulated his vision for contributing to the European Parliament, focusing on the needs of his hometown, Heimarra. “I am not vindictive; I want Albania to join the European family, but it must earn its place and not be granted membership without merit,” he declared.
Concerns About the Political Climate
When discussing the current situation in Himarra, Mr. Beleris stated, “My fellow citizens feel a profound sense of injustice. The August 4th election was a farce, manipulated by the ruling party to secure their chosen candidate. The political landscape here lacks true democratic separation, and I am troubled by the treatment of the Opposition leader.” He expressed concerns regarding the influence of external leaders, particularly Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Albanian politics.
