After 723 games in the NBA, he has had enough.
Frenchman Evan Fournier (31) is turning his back on the best league in the world after twelve years and is signing with Euroleague team Olympiakos Piraeus from Greece.
He is expected to earn at least 4 million US dollars (around 3.6 million euros) in two years.
Fournier’s Decision Explained
In an interview with the French sports newspaper “L’Equipe,” Fournier explains the reasons for his move: “I was in contact with a few NBA teams that were hoping to win the title. I was in particularly close contact with Milwaukee. But nothing came of it. Then I was offered a two-year contract by another team. But that didn’t interest me. I was supposed to act as a mentor for their talents, and I’m fed up with that.”
New Bayern Opponent: “The NBA Bored Me to Death”
During the Olympic Games in Paris, where France secured a silver medal after losing to Team USA in the final, Fournier gave his agent the green light to negotiate a transfer. Olympiakos and Paris Basketball were his first options, but the team from home quickly turned him down, leading him to Greece.
Fournier: “I am taking this step without regrets. I do not have an exit clause for the NBA in my contract. I want to finally settle down; I would like to end my career here and not move every year.”
In the NBA, the winger was under contract with five clubs, most recently with the Detroit Pistons.
Upon arriving at Athens airport, hundreds of Olympiakos fans greeted their new star with pyrotechnics and cheers. Fournier shared a video of the reception on social media.
He knows what the fans expect: victories against the hated rival Panathinaikos. The first derby is on October 26. Fournier already has the date in mind: “It’s going to be tough. It’s going to be a real slog. I definitely don’t want to experience what I’ve had in the NBA for two years now – it bored me to death.”
The 2.01-meter-tall player had received limited playing time towards the end of his NBA career.
In the Euroleague, Olympiakos fans are hopeful that their new superstar will help dethrone defending champion Panathinaikos.
On the way there, the Olympic silver medalist and his team will also play against German teams.
On October 25, the Greeks will travel to Bayern Munich, the German double winners, for an away match. The return match will take place on January 10, 2025.
Olympiakos will play against Alba Berlin, the runner-up in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga, at home on December 20 and away on April 4, 2025.
