Now summer is coming back in southern Norway – heat records are about to fall

Can we beat the September record of 28.6 degrees from Drammen in 2021? asks the Meteorological Institute.

The reason for the heat is that between low pressure in the west and high pressure in the east, very warm air is drawn from the south to southern Norway from Thursday.

In the first few days, there is a bit of unstable air, which produces these rainstorms that are expected from tonight and beyond tomorrow, meteorologist Eldbjørg Moxnes tells NTB.

– Now it seems that the forecasts are in agreement that it will be dry and warm from Thursday when we finish with the rainy weather, she says.

On Tuesday evening, an orange warning of heavy rain was sent out in Eastern Norway. There may be 50-60 millimeters of rain in some places. An orange danger warning for floods and landslides has also been sent out for parts of southern and eastern Norway.

– Quite summery

South of Stad and south of Dovre it can quickly reach 25 and up to 30 degrees in some places. It’s hot for September.

– There is abnormally warm air and really summery air masses. It lasts until Sunday. September will be more normal from Monday, says Moxnes.

She believes it is likely that heat records for September will be broken. While the national record is 28.6 degrees in Drammen, most of the county records are 27 and 28 degrees, according to the meteorologist. In Østfold, the record of 25.6 degrees may stand for the fall.

Four crazy days

At the time of writing, Yr’s forecast is 27 degrees in Oslo, 28 degrees in Bergen and 24 degrees in Stavanger on Thursday afternoon.

Further north in the country it will not be quite as hot, but also in Trøndelag and Møre og Romsdal it will be up to 25 degrees. Further north it gets cooler, but not cold.

– That heat doesn’t get there. But there will also be relatively good temperatures. On Friday, it looks like the heat will move a little north, and it could be up to 20 degrees in many places and a lot of sun. But there will be a bit more changing cloud cover and some rain in between, says Moxnes.

– There won’t be four terrible days like in southern Norway.
